Corn Grows: Week 11

For my faithful readers (OK, reader...thanks Becky), you may have noticed that I didn't get a chance to update my corn status last week. It was a busy weekend and it just didn't happen. Rest assured that the corn didn't stop growing however. I now have tassels and ears of corn! Definitely a better yield than last year, so I must be improving a bit.

My cucumbers and tomatoes are also doing very well...much better than we've gotten the past couple of years. But one question...I'm overflowing with cucumbers. What can you do with so many cucumbers? Anybody need any? Right now we're getting at least 2-3 a day, but I fear my yield is going to increase exponentially in the next week or so.

And finally, potatoes are doing great--at least on the top. I have no idea how they are doing underneath since I hesitate to pull up the weed fabric which would then require me to actually get out on a regular basis and get the weeds pulled.

My grandma used to pickle cucumbers in vinegar and who knows what else. They were quite delicous. And, to be truthful, I don't actually know who was doing that pickling. I just threw out my grandma because it wasn't my mom and I doubt it was my dad, but someone did some home pickling that occasionally showed up at our house and it was tasty. So, maybe you should do that. And then make a potato salad with some. And bring it to some gathering where I can eat it.

Oh...and I have fond memories of floating cucumber boats down the gutters at grandma's. Just an idea.

Pickles, Pickles, Pickles, dude! That is your answer for the excess of cukes. Oh, and have you ever had cucmber finger sandwiches - those are a tasty treat! A slice of cucumber, a little cream cheese (I think) and some sprouts on white or similar bread. Google it and I bet you could get a pleasant recipe for a good cucumber sandwich.
