Corn Grows 2010: Corn Fungus

While this year's harvest was an abysmal failure, we did have an unanticipated occurrence. While I was out picking tomatoes and cucumbers this morning, I noticed that I did have one small ear of corn that had formed at the bottom of a stalk. Unfortunately, it was more of a corn blooper, and was covered with corn smut.

You may recall that on our trip to Mexico last Fall, our guides took us to a Mexican market near Xochimilco in Mexico City and one of the options for our quesadillas was corn smut. Daniel and I tried it, and wasn't really that bad.

So far, we've declined to harvest the fungus...even if it is considered a delicacy in Mexico. But I'm willing to harvest it for anyone who wants it. First come, first served.
