Licorice at Stake Conference

When I was about 10ish, I rode my bike to George's Market near our home and bought a package of shoestring licorice. The next day was our Stake Conference at the Tabernacle and I wanted to put my licorice to good use and let it keep me entertained during the main session. So the Sunday morning before we left, I tied all of the pieces of licorice together with a knot on each end so it would make a continuous chain. For some unknown reason, I put the coiled string of licorice in my sock [what was I thinking?!?], ran it up my leg, through a hole in my pants pocket out of my pocket, up under my church sweater, and ran it up to my neck. As the meeting began, I started pulling the licorice up an inch at a time and bit off small pieces by putting my neck down to my chest and biting the end of the licorice chain. (At this rate, by my thinking, the licorice would last most of the meeting and then some.) But after about 10 minutes, one of my sisters wondered what I was doing and did some investigating and then notified my Mom. I remember the whole row in quite an uproar giggling over what I was doing. (And my Dad, in the Stake Presidency at the time and sitting on the stand, probably wondered what his family was up to.) After this incident, it became a family joke to talk about me taking shoestring licorice to Stake Conference.

They don't make shoestring licorice like they used to. In fact, you can rarely find it in the stores and have to order it online. Even then, its hard to tie all of the links together. (I've tried.) But I did buy a package of licorice twists before our last Stake Conference and I've passed the tradition on to my kids.

Here's Sara trying to surreptitiously partake:

HA! That's the funniest thing I've ever read. What an ingenious idea.

Okay, really, you were far older than ten. I know you had to be because that would have only made me four years old and I remember it far more vividly. I'm guessing you were at least 14! But then again, you should know since you also remember your own baby blessing! Sheesh.
