China Nite

About 4 or 5 Olympics ago, we started a family tradition of having a family dinner on the night of the Opening Ceremonies of each Olympics. For the food, we selected foods that represent the country where the games are held. Last night's dinner was easy: Chinese take-out with a few of our favorites: General Tsao's Chicken, Sweet & Sour, Sesame Beef, etc. We splurged a bit and ordered from the Mandarin in Bountiful. We set up two coffee tables in the family room so we could sit on the floor and eat with chopsticks. The food was OK, but I think it was definitely not the best we've ever had. (I think we'll stick to our other favorite chinese take out restaurant from now on.) I also found some sugared pineapple candies and some chinese cookies at the grocery store (along with the obligatory fortune cookies.) We let TiVo get ahead of us a little (so we could fast-forward through the commercials) and then sat down to watch the opening ceremonies. I love all of the tradition and ceremony, and I thought these were especially fun to watch. We got about half-way through the program, and the lights went out and stayed out until about 2 am. It was extremely aggravating for it to happen on that night, but we were able to catch a few of the scenes we missed from the end of the program from online video streams on nbc.com. As we talked about the next Winter Olympics in Vancouver and what we could do for our traditional meal, we're a bit unsure. Anybody know what the traditional meal is from Vancouver?? (It's probably fish and Becky, Sara and Anna won't go for that, so we'll have to come up with something else. Same goes for the 2012 Games in London. Daniel I both thought that Fish and Chips would be appropriate, but that got nixed at the outset. Yorkshire Pudding? Anything else?)

If only it was Vancouver, WA . . . then I could tell you McDonalds would be fine.

Will they eat Swedish fish ... or maybe only if the Olympics are in Sweden. Just a thought.
