And when I realized it, here's the real picture:
Corn is doing well.
But besides that, we've had a wonderful holiday weekend. We were looking forward to a quiet weekend, and we've taken it kind of easy. We prefer a simpler schedule. On Friday, we went to our town's fireworks show. It wasn't elaborate, but it was fun to be there and feel a part of the community.
On Saturday, we got Anna up early and ready to march in the parade with the Stake Primary. After dropping her off at the parade staging area, I went home and got Becky. Daniel had to work, and Sara was in Salt Lake, so it was just the two of us. It seems kind of funny not to have our kids with us at things like this, but I suspect that we'll be seeing a lot more of just each other as our kids get older. (And I can't think of anyone I'd rather be with!).
Here's our two lone chairs on Main Street. It eventually filled in just minutes before the parade began with families with young kids, so it would have seem kind of awkward for Becky and me to grab candy. We went home with just a couple of pieces we were able to slyly pick up when the other kids were otherwise occupied or distracted. We gave it to Anna because she was a bit disappointed she didn't get anything.
We spent the rest of the day working around the house, and then Becky made Sloppy Joes in the evening and we had a picnic on the "Verandah". (I left up on our deck the "Verandah" Clue sign [it was one of the "rooms"] that I made for Anna's birthday party last week and it still makes me smile when I see it.) The weather was PERFECT for an evening dinner outside and we had a great time just talking and laughing. We watched the movie "Avatar", and ended the evening laughing hysterically with the kids reenacting movie scenes with Nacho as a Na'vi.
After church on Sunday, Sara fixed us a wonderful meal with marinated chicken breasts, peppers, onions, mushrooms, potatoes and zucchini (fresh picked from our garden--adjacent to the corn) and put them on shish kabobs. She also made some fancy cupcakes with red and white striped cake, and blue frosting with stars. We started grilling and setting the table on the "Verandah" when I came inside and looked out the window. Nacho had something in his mouth and it took me a few seconds to realize that he had a cube of BUTTER in his mouth! Apparently, he saw us put the butter on the table for the corn on the cob and decided it looked enticing.
Here's his guilty look:
But the butter was easily replaced and we enjoyed a fantastic dinner outside again. The weather was just as enjoyable today. I wish every Fourth of July could be this pleasant!
Our delicious shish kabobs:
Daniel is really not as angry as he looks in this picture. I think he was more perturbed that we kept poking him during Sacrament Meeting to keep him awake.
The lovely cook:
The lovely cook:
A perfect way to celebrate the Fourth of July! I love being with our kids! They make me laugh.
Becky enjoyed the party so much, she even resorted to "chugging" the soda.
A couple of other items:
Anna graduated from Primary and joined Young Womens. The Beehives came and decorated our door on her birthday to welcome her.
Daniel started a competition with a co-worker to see who could grow a better mustache this summer. So to complement this edition of Corn Grows, I'll leave you with this inaugural edition of 'Stache Grows. We'll keep you posted.
(This was taken before Becky noticed he had shish kabobs on the side of his mouth. Becky's mission this summer in her own words: "I can't send you out into the world grossing people out!")
